Westtown School, West Chester, PA (Grade 11/12)

In 2018, Westtown School’s Scientific Research class was introduced to bird migration studies as a potential focus for conducting their own independent research projects. The learning experience involved both classroom and field elements to link background information delivered in a formal setting to observation of the seasonal bird banding operation at Willistown Conservation Trust’s Rushton Woods Preserve.

AIM Academy, Conshohocken, PA (Grade 8)

Beginning in fall 2020, AIM’s 8th grade science team helped inform the development of a learning module focused on avian conservation. Designed to emphasize social-emotional learning and flexibility for both in-person and virtual instruction, the module integrated existing activities and resources about bird migration and conservation with access to local expertise with the aim of engaging students in an interdisciplinary project-based learning experience.
